ABSTRACT

Today, global focus of research is to explore the solution of energy crisis and environmental pollution. Like other agricultural countries, bulk quantities of watermelon peels (WMP) are disposed-off in environment as waste in Pakistan and appropriate management of this waste is the need of hour to save environment from pollution. The work emphasizes the role of ethanologenic yeasts to utilize significant sugars present in WMP for low-cost bioethanol fermentation. Dilute hydrochloric acid hydrolysis of WMP was carried out on optimized conditions employing RSM (response surface methodology) following central composite design (CCD). This experimental design is based on optimization of ethanologenesis involving some key independent parameters such as WMP hydrolysate and synthetic media ratio (X1), incubation temperature (X2) and incubation temperature (X3) for maximal ethanol yield exploiting standard (Saccharomyces cerevisiae K7) as well as experimental (Metchnikowia cibodasensisY34) yeasts. The results revealed that maximal ethanol yields obtained from S. cerevisiae K7 was 0.36±0.02 g/g of reducing sugars whereas M. cibodasensisY34, yielded 0.40±0.01 g ethanol/g of reducing sugars. The yeast isolate M. cibodasensisY34 appeared as promising ethanologen and embodies prospective potential for fermentative valorization of WMP-to-bioethanol.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Present study was conducted to record ecotoparasitic prevalence in bat fauna of the northwestern parts of Pakistan. A total of 204 bat specimens representing 14 species were captured during a two year survey, extending from June 2015 through May 2016. A species of soft ticks Argas vespertilionis was identified from 23 bat specimens. Similarly, members of the family Dermanyssoidae (dermanyssoid mites) were isolated from 10 bat specimens, that of Spinturnicidae (spinturnicid mites) from 3 and Streblidae (bat flies) from 2 bat specimens. These parasites were collected using entomological tweezers and were identified on morphological basis. Further studies on parasitic prevalence, molecular characterization of bat parasites and their control measures are recommended.

ABSTRACT

Recently, several reports have been pointing to a possible relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection of gastric mucosa and dermatological diseases. Association has been reported for urticaria, rosacea, Sjogrens syndrome and Henoch-Schonlein purpura. It has also been suggested that Helicobacter pylori may be one of the organisms capable of triggering psoriasis. We did Helicobacter pylori serology in 50 clinically typical psoriatic patients presenting to the Department of Dermatology, SMHS Hospital, Srinagar to determine if antibodies to Helicobacter pylori could be found in them. These psoriatic patients were without any known gastrointestinal complaints. An equal number of healthy individuals constituted the control group. The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori sero-positivity in psoriatic patients was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than in control group.

ABSTRACT

Prevalence of asymptomatic Hepatitis B carrier state varies in different countries. Surgical procedures are an important mode of dissemination of Hepatitis B virus infection. Five hundred patients whose HBsAg status was not known and had undergone a major operative procedure in the Dhaka Medical College Hospital were screened for HBsAg. Of these, 43 (8.6%) were found to be HBsAg positive. Age, sex, and previous history of jaundice didn't show any relationship with the HBsAg status. But the HBsAg positivity was found to be positively related to the past history of blood transfusion, hospitalization and injections.
